Landroid Motors staff adventure with a customer in two very different Land Rover Defenders

Few places in the UK capture the spirit of Land Rover ownership quite like the remote heart of mid-Wales. Rugged hills, open moorland, river crossings and ancient tracks come together to create a natural playground made for Defenders. Recently, one of our team members joined a long-standing Landroid Motors customer for a full day exploring the Elan Valley and later tackling the iconic Strata Florida trail. With both vehicles prepared for proper off-road use and the weather offering classic Welsh unpredictability, it proved the perfect opportunity to enjoy these machines exactly as intended.

Setting Off into the Welsh Hills

Heading off across the hills

The day began with both Defenders making their way high into the hills above the Elan Valley. The first Landy, a battle scarred, bright yellow and heavily modified classic Defender, immediately looked at home against the dramatic backdrop. Fitted with a full external roll cage, Insa Turbo tyres, a stripped-back rear end and boasting 300TDi grunt and dependability, it was the dedicated off-roader of the pair.

Ahead of it was our customer’s Defender 110 in mint green. A 2.2 Puma equipped in a more touring-orientated style. With a roof rack, auxiliary spotlights and tasteful upgrades, it was set up for long days on the trail without losing any practicality for daily use.

The morning light cutting through the cloud hung low over the hills, casting a soft glow on the grass track. It set the tone for a day of mixed terrain, challenging conditions and the kind of scenery that makes the Elan Valley such a special place to explore.

A Scenic Lunch Stop in the Elan Valley

Before heading south towards Strata Florida, the group enjoyed a break along one of the Elan Valley’s most picturesque reservoir tracks. With the steep rocky cliff on one side and still, cold water stretching out on the other, it was an idyllic spot to pause and take in the landscape.

Both Defenders lined up neatly on the narrow strip of gravel, surrounded by winter colours and quiet open space. This moment captured exactly what makes the Elan Valley such a rewarding destination. Remote views, crisp air and the satisfaction of making steady progress through the hills created the ideal mid-morning stop.

Into the Heart of the Elan Valley

After the break the route continued deeper into the Elan Valley, where the terrain became more technical. One of the highlights was negotiating a rocky, water-worn section of trail beside a lively stream. The customer in his 110 used careful throttle control and steady momentum to climb the wet rock, proving the effectiveness of a touring-style set-up in real conditions.

The yellow Defender followed, its more extreme specification making easy work of the line. The surrounding landscape, with its mix of steep valley sides, bracken and flowing water, provided the perfect backdrop for a classic Welsh greenlane challenge.

Joining the Legendary Strata Florida Trail

With the Elan Valley explored and conditions still favourable, the group continued south to take on one of the UK’s most celebrated green lanes: Strata Florida. The historic route runs from Pontrhydfendigaid across the Cambrian Mountains and is well known for long water crossings, forestry sections, rutted tracks and varied terrain.

Strata Florida demands good vehicle preparation and even better judgement. Water crossings in particular vary dramatically by season and rainfall. Shallow flows can be simple enough, but after heavy weather certain crossings become deep, fast-moving and require careful assessment.

As the two Defenders made their way onto the trail the familiar rhythm of steady progress returned, with drivers working together to guide each other through obstacles, check depths and choose the right lines across the wetter stretches.

Defenders Doing What They Do Best

By the end of the day the pair had enjoyed some of the finest scenery Wales has to offer and successfully completed the route. The combination of technical challenges, open vistas and varied terrain created an unforgettable experience.

It is days like these that remind us why the Defender remains such a beloved icon. Whether heavily modified for extreme off-roading or subtly upgraded for touring and daily use, both vehicles shone in their respective roles. Mechanical simplicity, rugged engineering and genuine capability make the Defender the perfect companion for routes like Strata Florida.

At Landroid Motors we take great pride in helping customers build and maintain vehicles that can take on adventures like this with confidence. Sharing the trail with customers and seeing Defenders used as intended is always a highlight.
